She is a proclaimed go-getter and goes by the name Kui. When I met her, she is wearing a head wrap and an elegant African print dress which she tells me it’s from her fashion, Afrikui .She is confident and jovial I find her likable from the go.When I received the “Female Designer of the year” award in 2016, my certificate was then “Kui Dera” because I used to style models mostly in deras and head wraps. Being rewarded by house of legacy, a fashion agency that helps discover new talents, got another reward the following year recalls kui.
By the time she joined Multimedia university of Kenya, her African fashion sense was her signature. She is from the small community of Jew where the head wrap is called Tichel and it is required for young girls to married women to cover their hair. Because of her love free flowing dress, most people thought she was Muslim, it’s my trademark look, I believe in modesty and I believe in being African which to me shows strength” she explains.
